We have designed our curriculum so that it meets the needs of and engages our children; we have developed it to meet our school's individual needs and contribute to our local community. Our curriculum is knowledge rich, ambitious and sequenced so that the children make progress in their knowledge and skills and can make links between prior and future learning.
Learning to read is one of the most important things your child will learn at our school. Everything else depends on it, so we put as much energy as we possibly can into making sure that every single child learns to read as quickly as possible. We want your child to love reading – and to want to read for themselves. This is why we work hard to make sure children develop a love of books as well as simply learning to read.
Curriculum requirements for all subjects are delivered through the Primary National Curriculum (2014).
Our curriculum is carefully planned at long, medium and short term levels:
Our long term planning provides both an annual curriculum overview map for each subject and a comprehensive curriculum tracker for each year group from Reception to Year 6. Class teachers also prepare an Annual Curriculum Overview for parents each academic year.
Class Teachers prepare a more detailed curriculum overview for each subject, which exemplifies intended curriculum coverage on a weekly basis each term or half term. Opportunities are always planned for each subject/topic/theme to be assessed using a variety of methods - which may involve quizzes, questioning or tests.
Pupils are also provided with access to a Knowledge Organiser for their topic related work in History & Geography - and often for many other curriculum areas.
Class teachers plan on a weekly basis for the opportunities and experiences that they will be providing for their class across all curriculum subjects, including provision in our Outdoor Learning Space and other outdoor provision - such as our mud kitchens, sand pits and outdoor stage.
We want the West Winch Curriculum to put all learners at the heart of their learning and for our curriculum to support learners in making strong connections in their knowledge, skills and understanding across all subjects.
We strive to ensure that our children’s attainment in core and foundation subjects is in line with or exceeds age-related expectations. We intend that our children will be fully prepared for their next stage of education and ready to contribute positively to society as a whole.
Our work in promoting social skills, including values, resilience and well-being enables our children to become the very best that they can be.
